Autistic people thrive on being in a familiar environment with routine and structure. This makes transition in any education or life phase difficult.

For children starting or changing school, we recommend that you start planning for their transition as soon as you can.

Whether moving key stages or looking beyond school, transition planning for older pupils needs to begin at different stages depending on where you live. For young people in Scotland, planning should begin at least 12 months before they are due to leave school. In England and Wales, it should begin as early as Year 9. For pupils in Northern Ireland, it's year 10.

Here we have information that is relevant for England and Scotland only. You can also read information on where to go for to find out about transition from secondary school in Wales and Northern Ireland
